In purely film terms Silva invites comparisons to Iceland's Dagur Kari, both of them dressing stories of youth without focus in high style while still remaining firmly focused on their characters. La Vida Me Mata is a smart, dryly funny film whose roots in tragedy do not prevent Silva from indulging in some truly brilliant sight gags and bursts of the fantastic. It is a remarkably assured debut picture particularly when you consider just how far removed it is from the bulk of Chile's film output.
