Fern, a compassionate, middle-aged woman is living for the first time on her own and out of her car. Lyle is a single man struggling with the loss of his beloved pet dog and trying to find a balance between mourning and recovering. Fern is forced to squat in Lyle's basement without his knowledge and her desire to take care of Lyle begins to give her away, especially when Lyle brings home a new dog. As Lyle's suspicions grow about someone secretly living in his house, everything comes to a boiling point in ways Fern or Lyle never foresaw.
